Additional Information - MCOTS Equipment for UAV Applications |
![]() |
UAV's come in all sizes and present a number of engineering problems for systems designers. Size changes dramatically between aircraft such as Global Hawk down to small hand launched systems. Weight is critical and you are never given enough allowance. Performance is always restricted by size, weight and power availability. Lastly (and most importantly) environmental problems shock, vibration and temperature all contribute to the over all reliability of the system in field use. Many Engineers have found that going from prototype to actual reliable fielded system means a complete re-design.

Inertial Navigation Unit: The HG-1700-104 interface is a FPGA based SDLC interface for the Honeywell HG-1700 and HG-1900 Inertial Measurement Units (IMU). This utilizes a factory programmed CPLD configuration device, the FPGA configuration is loaded at runtime via a DOS application. All features are register based and can be IO mapped to ISA bus IO space via a config file. Message filters allow user to read the 600 Hz or 100 Hz messages separately or both. |

GPS: MicroBee Systems now offers the Novatel Super Star II 5 Hz or OEMV-1 GPS in PC/104 format. Utilizing the XR16C2850 Dual 128 Byte FIFO UART this CPLD based module allows access to both the data port and differential correction port with a full 128 bytes of buffer space. This means just one interrupt per GPS message! In addition this unit offers features such as simple rotary switch address selection, a third external high speed 16C850 serial port, software control of GPS reset and 1PPS output signal manipulation.

Example Application: The OVIWUN is the first unmanned aerial vehicles employing powered-lift technology. The intelligence resides inside its VersaLogic PC/104- Plus CPU, the Puma, which maintains the delicate thrust and angle balance used to control the vehicle. The vehicle needed an embedded solution with long-term availability and excellent Engineering support. VersaLogic's RoHS-compliant Puma platform was selected, it draws only 5W during operation and less then 800mW in standby mode. With 3 USB ports, 3 COM ports, an LPT port and a 10/100 Ethernet interface, the Puma is appropriate for light-weight, mobile applications where low-power is essential.

The Puma GX500 CPU has an
impressive list of on-board features, including integrated high-performance
video with flat panel support, 10/100 Ethernet, four USB ports, three COM
ports, LPT port, and an IDE interface. A CompactFlash socket provides bootable
media storage, and TVS devices provide enhanced ESD protection on user I/O
ports. The Puma includes 256 MB of soldered-on, high-speed RAM for optimum
application performance. All Versalogic products are designed for high reliability
and long-term availability in applications with a fielded life of 5+ years. |

PC/104 & PC/104-Plus ideal for small UAVs: VersaLogic's smallest form factor is ideal for specialized applications where space is at a premium. PC/104 is a self-stacking design that does not require a card cage or other interconnect support. With only 13.4 square inches of surface area, PC/104 SBC's are typically more costly to manufacturer or have less I/O capacity than larger formats. VersaLogic provides both PC/104 single board computers (which can be further expanded with PC/104 modules) and PC/104 add-on I/O modules. PC/104 products provide a single ISA bus connector that allows data transfer at about 8M bit/sec. PC/104-Plus products include both ISA and PCI bus connectors which support high speed I/O devices (such as video frame grabbers) with data transfers up to 133M byte/sec. |
